Winkler Golf Course Expands
During the past six years, the Winkler Golf Course has been rapidly expanding. This beautiful mix of both parkland and links style golf in this 18 hole layout, combined with the relaxed atmosphere of being located in the small town of Winkler, Manitoba Canada, offers a unique experience. Besides being one of the best “bargain for your buck” in the province of Manitoba, this golf course has seen multiple upgrades.
The hiring of its very first CPGA teaching profession of Greg Hesom, launched the Winkler Golf Course in the right direction. Greg Hesom, the former assistant teaching professional out of the neighboring Minnewasta Golf Course, has teamed up with the Board Committee for the golf course to bring things that once were only a distant dream for both the members as well as the golf course itself.
It did not take long things to get underway. This started with the launching of the new and improved website for Winkler Golf Course. This brought a new look for the club, and included some really nice additions. Teaming up with the Golf Course restaurant (Mulligan’s) the website is equipped with a full tournament scheduling and events, as well as the daily menus and specials for the golf course. The feature aspect for the website however, is the newly introduced online tee time booking system. With the technological world moving forward, it’s now as easy as logging onto the golf course website to book a tee time anywhere from a hour from the current time, to up to two weeks in advance.
The golf course itself has also seen many improvements during the six year span. Numerous bunkers have been relocated to match the change in the game over the last few decades. Kicks these days are hitting the ball farther than ever and the old locations of bunkers just were not testing these long ball bombers enough. The golf course changed from its known par 72 to a new par of 71. Hole #14 was changed from a reachable 471 par 5, to a daunting 440 yard par 4 with two new bunkers and a pond added to the hole layout.
With the golf course originally being a 9 hole golf course, that later expanded to a full 18 holes, some of the old green shapes were starting to have seen its better days, and did not really fit the new layout design of the golf course. Professional Hesom did not take long to get a grasp on this issue. Introduced a mere two years ago, hole numbers 8 and 18 saw the first of the new greens, with still another 5 new greens to be designed in the near future.
I have been a member at Winkler Golf Course for the last 11 years, and the golf course has never looked any better. I have worked in the pro shop for the last six years, and am really excited at some of the new additions and changes that are planned. Check out the new 2012 rates on the exciting looking website at www.winklergolfcourse.com
